Controller
Summary
The Controller oversees the maintenance of all financial functions and results of the Company. They will ensure that accounting functions are accurate, timely, and completed efficiently. The Controller is also responsible for ensuring that adequate internal controls and segregation of duties exist and are documented to protect the assets of the company. They will ensure that all balance sheet accounts are reconciled monthly and contain a proper representation of assets and liabilities. In this role, they will establish and maintain accounting systems and implement internal controls to ensure adherence to accounting standards and company policies and procedures. Assigns, directs and evaluates accounting and administrative staff professionals.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and support accountants in processing financial data and maintaining financial records.
- Prepare monthly financial statements that are complete, accurate, timely, and GAAP-compliant.
- Assist the CFO in preparing leadership reports and financial statement presentations.
- Analyze financial data by business unit, identifying variances from budget or projections.
- Lead the development of annual financial projections for the company.
- Coordinate with external CPAs for annual financial reviews and tax filings.
- Ensure compliance with all tax filing requirements (income, property, sales, and personal property taxes), ensuring timely and accurate submissions.
- Respond to inquiries from accounting staff and provide regular performance feedback.
- Help establish and monitor KPIs and performance metrics, investigating discrepancies as needed.
- Manage inventory processes, including setting and monitoring reorder points.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned by leadership or the CFO.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Lead, guide, and evaluate accounting staff; maintain open communication and credibility within the team.
- Develop and document accounting best practices and ensure all staff are trained and cross-trained.
- Provide coaching, feedback, and corrective action when necessary, maintaining appropriate documentation.
- Assess and address accounting department staffing needs.
Required Skills & Abilities
- Strong technical accounting knowledge and ability to apply GAAP principles.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
- Experience with Sage 100 and/or PlotBox is a plus.
- Skilled in preparing consolidated financial statements, including eliminations.
- Ability to analyze complex financial data and draw insightful conclusions.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (required).
- CPA, CMA, or MBA (preferred).
- 4–5 years of progressive accounting and supervisory experience (required).
- Experience in public accounting or related industry (preferred).
